Hamster Princess: Harriet the
Invincible, 247 pgs. Dial Books for Young
Readers, 2015. (Penguin) $12.99

Harriet never wanted to be a princess and do princess
stuff, she had always sought out adventure. Harriet was cursed to touch a
hamster wheel at her christening. She
was supposed to touch the wheel at age twelve and fall into a sleep like death. Harriet
finds out at age ten that she is cursed and is thrilled about it. Harriet is invincible because she knows she’ll
live until the curse, so she does stupid and dangerous things like jumping off
cliffs. When her 12th birthday comes along she goes home and the curse backfires
and she need a prince’s help.
I like this book because the pictures were good
and I liked that she chased down her dreams. I did not like this book because
the author messed with a classic fairy tale.
The main character wasn’t likable because she was stubborn and
annoying. There are a lot of pictures, but it's not quite a graphic novel.

Thank you for this perspective. Harriet was rather annoying, but I thought the twist on the fairy tale was interesting.
