DeStefano, Lauren A Curious Tale of In-Between, 224 pages.
Bloomsbury, 2015. Violence: PG; Mature Content: PG (implied suicide); Language: G. Pram, 11, has lived with her
maiden aunt’s since her mother died as Pram was born. Until now she been
home schooled, and Pram is happy with the arrangement, because she has Felix, a
ghost, to keep her company. But the district insists that Pram come to
the building and there she is basically invisible to every student except Clarence,
the boy she trades seats with every day. First Pram accompanies George to
séances to help him get in contact with his own dead mother, but when the pair
start looking for Pram’s father (she knows her mother has already passed on),
she comes to the attention of an unscrupulous medium who wants to steal Prams
powers.
For a book with an 11 year old protagonist, this is pretty
dark. Pram’s mother committed suicide, Clarence is boxed up and thrown
into water to drown - heavy stuff. While I enjoyed the book, I am unsure
of the intended audience.
