My Life as a Gamer by Janet Tashjian - ADVISABLE

Tashjian, Janet My Life as a Gamer, cartoons by Jake Tashjian, 250 pgs. MacMillan (Henry Holt), 2015. $13.99. Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: G.

Derek and his friends have the opportunity to be a test group from a brand new video game, and there are cash prizes for the best players.  But no one is as good as the mystery player El Cid.  Carley is on his team, and the boys are jealous because maybe she’s getting hints from him; hints she’s not about to share.  Oh, and it’s state  test time in class.  Ms. McCoddle is super stressed about it, so the whole class is taking practice test after practice test.  Derek’s tutor doesn’t seem to help either.

Book 5 in the “My Life” series isn’t a must read in order, but I would suggest you start from the beginning with My Life as a Book.  This installment shows the stress that both teachers and students are having regarding standardized state testing.  The illustrations of the vocabulary word are getting more sophisticated (as Jake gets older).  A quick read, even for a reluctant reader.  if they like Wimpy Kid, they will like this series.
