Slobodkina, Esphyr. Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, PICTURE BOOK. Harper Collins Publishers, 1940. $17.99.
This is the 75th anniversary edition of the popular children’s book. A peddler goes out to sell his hats one day and business is very slow. He decides to take a nap under a tree, with his hats stacked up on his head. When he wakes up, all the hats are gone! He discovers that the tree he was sleeping under is full of monkeys and they’re wearing all his hats. He shakes his finger at them and orders them to give the hats back. The monkeys only imitate his actions and make noises back at the peddler. Eventually, the peddler gets so frustrated at the monkeys that he throws his hat on the ground and begins to walk away. The monkeys imitate him once again and all the hats are thrown out of the tree.
This is a classic picture book that many readers will remember and is a good addition to any library. The illustrations are original and are a unique style to the story. It’s usually a hit with young audiences.
