Cousins, Lucy Maisy's Racecar. BOARD BOOK. Candlewick Press, 2015. Language: G (no swears, no “F’s”); Mature content: G; Violence: G.
Maisy's Racecar is a fast-paced, exciting, and engaging story in the Go With Maisy Board Book series. Maisy and her friends decide to have a race. Maisy starts in the lead, but loses her advantage when all of the racers have to pause their fun so that tortoise can cross the track. For awhile it looks like Tallulah might have the win in the bag, but Charlie zooms by at the last minute and wins the race. All of the racers and spectators celebrate with ice cream. While the birds enjoy birdseed, the cat has some milk, and tortoise snacks on some fresh lettuce.
The illustrations in this book are delightful and lend to teaching young fingers to point out what is going on in the story. The birds, the cat, and a friendly earthworm appear in the pictures without being mentioned in the text. This helps the reader make inferences about what is going on through the pictures which is a great skill to acquire even for very young minds. Another great read from author Lucy Collins!
