Dowd, Siobhan Solace of the Road, 272 pgs. David Fickling Books, 2011. $8.99. Language-PG (Swear Count: 0, but many ‘Fag’ as cigarette); Violence-G; Sexual Content-PG13).
Holly hasn’t had much of home life, having lived much of her life in a youth center. When she is offered the opportunity of a real life in a foster home, Holly decides to take it. Its not so easy changing, and when she visits her old friends, she finds out that life goes on, and sometimes people get left behind. One day when Holly finds a wig, she decides to put it on and become Solace, a girl is who confident and in control of her life. Solace decides to find her real mom and have an adventure. Will Holly find out where she belongs?
Some readers may enjoy the slow plot, and find Holly’s murky musings about life to be authentic, but I found it to be so dull that I really didn’t care about what happened to her. Also, I had a hard time following a lot of the British colloquialisms, which I think will throw off students as well. Overall the lessons this book had to offer left me feeling gray and drab. Students may relate to Solace’s wish to take to the open road and leave all responsibilities behind.
