Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier - ADVISABLE

Gier, Kerstin Ruby Red, 330 p. Henry Holt, 2011.  $19.

Gwen, 16, has always played second fiddle to her beautiful, graceful cousin Charlotte.  And more than her friends know, Gwen has watched Charlotte be groomed all of her life for her upcoming role as a time traveler, leaving Gwen on the outskirts of even her own family.  When Charlotte’s time approaches, however, it is Gwen who through time – startling everyone.  Now the whole society of time travelers is sent into a whirl.  Especially since Gwen has been neither trained – nor indoctrinated - into the society’s purpose.  So who knows what the headstrong girl will actually do!  Gwen has to learn quickly, because she is the crux of a very difficult choice – and she may be alone against the entire group.  Some interesting surprises await Gwen in the past.

I was captivated from the beginning and couldn’t put this down until I had finished it!  Instead of messing up time lines and laying out alternated dimensions, Gier’s story is about other things – things of the head and the heart.
