How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson - - ADVISABLE

Nelson, Marilyn How I Discovered Poetry, 112 pgs. Dial Books, 2014. $17.99. Language: PG (0 swears, references to racial slurs) Violence: G; Mature Content: G.

Growing up in the 1950’s as the child of an Air Force officer, young Marilyn Nelson recounts 10 years of her family moving to various locations in the United States and Europe.  Told in verse (unrhymed sonnets) the reader experiences the prejudice, the friendships and the childhood, growth and understanding of this popular poet.

Nelson has written other civil rights books (A Wreath for Emmet Till i.e.), however, this is a beautiful slice of americana, the focus more on growing up than issues.  The poems can stand alone, but read in order it’s a real treat.
