In the West African country of Mali, the reader follows the path
of a mother and her young daughter as they spend a day together. The mother
binds the child to her back in a wrapped pouch and they go through the motions
of preparing food, getting water, meeting friends for shopping. The mother
prepares her daughter for when she is too big to ride on her back. This is a wonderful little story about the bond between a mother and daughter, a message that spans cultures. But I can’t quite picture a place for it in my school library. There isn’t a ton of cultural information. Also I don’t think students would quite be on board with the bond between mother and child thing and how that is represented by the wrap carrying method. The artwork is watercolor and very beautiful.
