Van Wagenen, Maya Popular a Memoir: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek, 259 pgs. Penguin Group, 2014. $18.99. Language: PG ( 20 swears 0 Fs); Violence: G; Mature Content: PG.
When Maya’s dad finds an old book from the 1950s in a thrift shop, Maya decides to follow the author’s ideas for being popular, and commits to write about her experience through her 8th grade year. Can the advice from more than 60 years ago help today’s young girls? From dieting tips and hair care, to modeling, makeup and making friends, with the help of Betty Cornell, Maya is turning into a “truly delightful individual.”
This non-fiction memoir reads like a teen novel. A little drama, some angst and the perils of trying to become popular (based on ideas from a generation or two past) made this a real page turner. Plus, Maya has included her own advice to the reader along with appropriate passages from “Teenage Popularity Guide” I can’t wait to recommend this book.
