Meyer, Marissa Fairest, 220 p. Feiwel (Macmillan),
2015. $18. Violence: PG (burnt bodies, not graphic).
Princess Levana has always lived under the shadow and
cruelty of her beautiful older sister Channary, the heir to the Lunar
throne. Her entire life, Channary has
never missed a chance to emotionally brutalize Levana and after their parents
are murdered by a shell, the abuse only worsens. In order to find someone to love, Levana uses
her Lunar powers to manipulate one of her guards. Every chance she has to make a choice to be
kind or good, Levana chooses manipulation, brutality, and even murder to get
what she thinks she wants.
Meyer has fully drawn a portrait of Levana as an evil
person, who, despite her childhood under her evil sister, deserves no pity as
she has never chosen kindness when manipulation will get her what she wants
much faster. Enjoy this bridge as we all
wait for Winter, the final book in the Lunar Chronicles, to be published.
