Winters Child by Angela McAllister –ADVISABLE

McAllister, Angela Winters Child Templar, 2015. $16.99 PICTURE BOOK
A little boy named Tom loves winter and spends his days enjoying all it has to offer. He even finds a friend who is very fun and mysterious, and together they have adventures in the icy landscape. But at home, they are running out of food and wood, and spring just won’t come. Will their family survive?
This is a very large picture book with strangely enchanting, yet deeply creepy illustrations (especially of the people). I usually don’t go for books that are kind of off kilter, but this book has a very life or death old school folktale vibe, which is kind of appealing. There is a reason that folktales enduring and I think students will relate to the ending of this book, and there is certainly a lot to look at the unusual illustration artwork.
