Macy, Sue Miss Mary Reporting: The True Story of
Sportswriter Mary Garber, illustrated by C.F. Payne. PICTURE BOOK.
Simon & Schuster, 2016.
$18. Content: G.
Born in the 1910’s, Mary Garber always adored football – and
reporting on life in a newspaper format.
She was able to combine her two loves by getting a job on the
Winston-Salem newspaper, a job she kept for over fifty years. Her beat covered everything from local sports
(including some of the first reporting on African-American high school sports)
to the major leagues (where she was the first woman allowed into the press
box). Mary paved the way for female
reporters of the next generation to get admitted to the locker room.
An excellent addition to any library and shop this to your
P.E. teachers and any class that covers history, including women’s issues.
EL-ADVISABLE; MS, HS – OPTIONAL.
Cindy, Library teacher
