This book features a bear cub reporter asking Cesar Chavez questions about his life. Everything, including his childhood is geared around his life’s accomplishments, so growing up on a farm in bad conditions led to his involvement with creating unions for farmers. Many photographs are included.
The Bear Cub Reporter concept is fantastic, it helps to organize the information and gives the book an interactive feel! Because of this books narrow focus, it could not be successfully used for a biography report by a student, but may work well for a teacher highlighting Mr. Chavez, as it is very short and clear. Very little effort is made for the reader to get to know his personal life or details of his childhood, which is what really grabs students readers. Although this is an easier read (maybe 2-3 grade level) the concepts of unions and strikes might be better understood by higher grades.
