Vernick, Audrey The Kid From Diamond Street: The
Extraordinary Story of Baseball Legend Edith Houghton, illustrated by Steven
Salerno. PICTURE BOOK. Clarion Books (Houghton), 2015. $18.
Content: G.
Edith Houghton was born in 2912 – a time when women were
expected to wear long dresses and skirts and they didn’t have the right to
vote. That didn’t stop Edith from
becoming a professional baseball player at the age of ten. Nor did her family stop her from going on a
extended baseball exhibition tour in Japan.
After her career ended, she still worked as a scout for the
Phillies.
While people always talk about the men of baseball, I love
this look at another woman who also has excelled at the sport. Useful at many different grade levels, if you
can get your middle school or high school P.E. teachers to add books to their
curriculum.
