Once Upon a Dream by Liz Braswell - ESSENTIAL

Braswell, Liz Once Upon a Dream, 448 pages.  Disney, APRIL 2016.  $18.  Language: PG (6 swears, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (Maleficent kills people to fuel her powers, some blood).

The Prince has come to waken Sleeping Beauty with a kiss – but what!?  He has fallen asleep, instead.  And straight into a dream world created by Maleficient to hold Aurora in thrall until her time to fight back has run out.  First some how Aurora has to realize on her own that the world she occupies is not real.  Then she has to find courage, not a gift from the three fairies, to face her challenges and save everyone.

This is the story that Disney should have used to launch the Twisted Tales series and this is the movie that should have been made instead of Maleficent.  Welcome to a Disney princess who becomes more than a pretty face – a princess who can actually become a role model.  I hope Disney makes these into movies – even TV movies would be welcome!
