Extremities: Stories of Death, Murder, and Revenge by David Lubar - OPTIONAL

Lubar, David Extremities: Stories of Death, Murder, and Revenge, 205 pgs. Tor Teen, 2013. $15.99. Language: PG 8 swears (0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG-13

Death, murder, and things that go bump in the night all take a turn in short stories written to scare. Whether it is supernatural forces or a mere mortal plotting revenge, secrets will be revealed and the scales of justice balanced.

This book is a collection of short stories that fail to give the desired effect. Out of thirteen stories only two are creepy and written well enough to deserve a place in a frightening story collection. In the other eleven stories the idea of what the author wants to be scary is obvious, but rarely comes off. Fans of horror reads will be left wanting especially with other offerings available that are better written. The author makes sure to warn in his introduction that the stories are not for children, but all the protagonists are teenagers and besides, the warning is unnecessary as the stories are not disturbing or particularly terrifying.
