The Inventor's Secret by Andrea Cremer - OPTIONAL

Cremer, Andrea The Inventor’s Secret, 370 pgs.  Philomel Books, 2014.  $18.99  Content: Language: PG-13 (11 swears); Mature Content: PG-13; Violence: PG-13.

Charlotte lives in the Catacombs and helps gather supplies with her brother Ash and his annoying friend Jack.  They are waiting until they are old enough to join the adults as part of the Resistance and fight against the British who have won the Revolutionary War.  In an attempt to advance their cause they masquerade Charlotte as a new debutante in high society and try to find sympathizers.

Weaved throughout the main story is romance, mystery and steampunk inventions.  Charlotte is a likable character and the story line has potential, but it gets bogged down with details of their every action.  I felt like the main motivation of the characters was lost and the world in which they lived was hard to imagine.  The violence was gruesome and included people dying.
