Pelham, David. Sam’s Sandwich, PICTURE BOOK. Candlewick Press, 2015. $9.99.
Sam’s sister loves to eat. She is building herself a giant sandwich and Sam decides to “help.” Inside of each stack of meat or cheese or vegetables, Sam adds some kind of squirming bug.
The reader gets to lift flaps to see which critter is added and also has to use rhyming skills to give it a name (“But as a tasty little filler, Sam popped in a…”), because only the picture of the bug is given and not spelled out. This book is a reprint and is shaped exactly like a sandwich. It’s a really fun, gross, engaging book. It will likely get some wear and tear in a school library, but it is still a purchase that will elicit squeals of disgusted joy. Content: G.
