Sehgal, Kabir. The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk, PICTURE BOOK. Beach Lane Books, 2015. $17.99.
Rather than the familiar The Wheels on the Bus song, we learn about some of the cultural differences of experiencing ride a tuk tuk in India. Riders will have to squish, squish, squish together. They’ll hear cows saying moo, moo, moo. They might also get to eat poppa-doppa-doms. I really like this alternate version of the song. It gives readers a way to connect with a different culture.
Teachers and parents will find this a great excuse to help their students and children learn more about another place and it will produce some great discussion of India itself, but also comparisons and differences with American culture. The illustrations depict the song and place well so that the reader can visualize it, and children will enjoy some of the unfamiliar language combined with a well-known tune.
