The Terror of the Southlands by Caroline Carlson - ESSENTIAL

Carlson, Caroline.  The Terror of the Southlands.  Harper, 2014.  $16.99.  319 pages.  Content: G.  Fans of Hilary Westfield will be delighted with this second adventure in The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates series.  The unthinkable has happened...Pirate Westfield has received a warning from the Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates.  She is accused of the heavy crimes of not participating in the League's parties, consorting with a governess, and not owning a parrot.  Hilary is given a warning by the president of the League of Pirates, Captain Blacktooth: do something piratey and do it now.  Meanwhile, the Enchantress who was looking for her replacement, is kidnapped from her finishing school.  Hilary sets off to solve the mystery with first mate Charlie and soon recruits her friend Claire.  Hilary meets field inspector John Hastings who is also looking for the Enchantress, Miss Pimm.  He isn't fond of pirates and isn't very clever.  Hilary discovers a secret group called the Mutineers.  She must stop their diabolical plans, find the Enchantress, save the monarchy, and of course, live up to her title, "The Terror of the Southlands."  To do this, Hilary must do the unthinkable--attend a high society ball!  Carlson delivers an adventurous mystery suitable for all buccaneers.  Her writing style is witty and she uses letters, articles, warnings, and narrative to tell Hilary's story.
