Gifts from the God’s –Ancient Words &
Wisdom from Greek and Roman Mythology 96 pgs. Houghton Mifflin
Books for Children, 2011. $13.86. (Rating:
G).
This book explores the
origins of some commonly used words. It starts by defining the word, then a
modern day example of the word in use is provided via a short excerpt from a
current children story, next is the Greek or Roman mythology tale that is
behind the origin of the word, and each section finishes with a description of
how that word and its offshoots are used today. Examples are Nemesis, Victory,
Fortune and Fate.
One word best describes
this book: REVEVANCY. I remember learning about mythology in elementary school and
when I found out that the myths were just stories, I wondered why we had to
learn them. This book takes care of that -being relevant, educational, and entertaining. The stories are
engaging and the illustrations are wonderful.
