Yes, Yes, Yaul! by Jef Czekaj-NO

Czekaj, Jef, Yes, Yes, Yaul! Disney Hyperion, 2012. PICTURE BOOK.

Rabbit likes to do everything fast, including rapping and singing. Turtle, loves to do everything slow. When the two put on a performance for the forest, everyone likes it except for Yaul, the prickly porcupine. In fact, he hates everything. To get him to loosen up, the forest animals plan a surprise birthday party for Yaul. Will they be able to help him learn to love something?

The pictures are fun and complement the text well as far as I can tell. Although the idea of reading parts slow and other parts fast is fun, the rhythm of the book is distracting. The author uses phrases and words that most kids will have no idea what he’s talking about and won’t be able to figure it out their meanings in context. In general, I don’t think young children will be able to understand this book enough to enjoy it. PreK, EL(K-3). NO. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
