Newman, Leslea. A Sweet Passover. Illustrated by David Slonim. 40 pgs.
Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2012.
$16.95. G -PICTURE BOOK. Miriam loves everything about the
Passover. She loves spending time with
her extended family, she loves the traditions, and she loves, loves, loves
eating matzah! She eats and eats and
eats, until she becomes sick, sick, sick.
When Grandpa makes a very special breakfast with matzah, Miriam refuses
to eat. The loving adults in her family
explain to her why matzah and all the Passover traditions are so important to their
family. Miriam finally sees why this special time of year is so important. This book could be used in a unit on family
traditions or religious celebrations.
Although the book is interesting and the illustrations are incredible,
there isn’t much more application to the classroom. We liked reading the fact sheets at the end
of the book. The author even gives the
recipe for “Matzah Brei”. Pre-K. EL (K-3).
OPTIONAL. Reviewer: SL.
