Potter, Alicia Mrs. Harkness and the Panda, illustrated by
Melissa Sweet. Knopf (Random),
2012. $17. PICTURE BOOK. Content: G.
In
1934, Ruth’s husband, William Harkness, set off for China to bring a panda bear
to the US. When Ruth is told that
her husband died in China, she is determined to go to China and bring back the
panda as her gift to him. Even
though she is a dainty woman who designed tea dresses, she was undeterred in
her quest. It is a journey of
thousands of miles and tons of courage.
While you might be upset with Mrs. Harkness’ methods, that first panda
was actually the beginning of the modern animal conservation movement. Any level science class would find
value in this offering.
