Rothenberg, Jess. The Catastrophic History of You and Me,
375 pgs. Dial Books, 2012. $17.99. Language PG-13 (34 swears, 0 ‘f’) Sexual
Content PG-13, Violence G. Right before her sixteenth birthday, Brie Eagan
literally dies of a broken heart when her boyfriend tells her that he doesn’t
love her. Brie’s heart cracks in half, and she finds herself in limbo where she
must complete the five stages of grief before she can move on onto the
afterlife. With the help of a mysterious boy, Patrick, Brie is able to go back
to her hometown and watch how her death is affecting her family and friends.
What Brie doesn’t realize is that Patrick holds the key to her moving on to the
afterlife. I liked this book a lot. Brie is easy to like, even though she can
be very stubborn, and Patrick is the kind of old school boy that every girl
wanted to fall in love with. It was fun to see Brie come to the realization
that not everything revolves around her, and other people have been affected by
her death. Middle School, High School- ADVISABLE. Reviewer: AL
