Di Piazza, Domenica Space Engineer and Scientist Margaret Hamilton (Stem Trailblazer Bios) 32 pgs. Lerner,
2017. $20.
This
book tells the life story of the software programmer (and much more) Margaret
Hamilton. From her early love of math, to her education, her first job at MIT,
her creativity, hard work, and innovation. Readers discover how essential her
role was in the first lunar landing, how she continues today to promote
innovation and in 2016 won a Presidential Medal of freedom. Lots of photographs
fill the pages of this book.
What
a great book and what a great series. I have this entire series on my to-buy
this, but I love this book in particular because of a picture book that can accompany
it -Margaret and the Moon by Dean Robbins. I think this one will really grabs students attention
as they are intrigued by space travel. Since starting the yearly Hour of Code,
we also have a lot of students interesting in coding, so it’s a great combo. I
like it because it shows women in science –especially from a time where that
was not the norm. Well written, and just enough for a student to do a biography
(though some fun and interesting facts would have added more to young readers).
Its just stuffed with relevant photographs which is great for young readers as well.
