Better Together: A Book of Family by Barbara Joosse and Anneke Lisberg- ADVISABLE

Joosse, Barbara and Anneke Lisberg Better Together:A Book of Family.  Illustrated by Jared Andrew Schorr.  PICTURE BOOK. Abrams Appleseed, 2017. $14.95. Content: G.

As a nervous zebra grazes on the plane he is worried that he might be all alone! But as the flap is lifted, he is surrounded by “a dazzle of zebras” so he has nothing to fear.  What about a hungry bat who’s tummy goes “rumbly tumbly”? Is he all alone? Open the flap to find that a “cloud of bats soon gather round to share with the hungry one, upside down”.

Each page introduces a new animal who appears to be alone and afraid but as the flap is opened, finds family gathered around.  The last page shows a little toddler alone in the room but as the flap opens, and entire family is there to keep him clean and fed and to take care of him so that he is never alone.  The back of the book contains “fun things to know” about each of the animals in the story. We enjoyed the peek through pages and lifting the flap to find the animal families taking care of each other. The colors are bright and fun.  The pages are sturdy cardboard that will last for year of reading enjoyment.

PRE-K. (EL-K-3). ADVISABLE. Reviewer: SL.
