Egg by Kevin Henkes - ADVISABLE

Henkes, Kevin   Egg  Unpaged. Green willow Books, 2017. $17.99. PICTURE BOOK

On the first page divided into four panels, we see four pastel eggs. Three eggs crack and hatch into chicks, but not the green one. After some waiting and listening and pecking, the fourth egg finally hatches. But the animal that hatches out is a surprise, and the three birds are scared away. Slowly, they come back and all four become friends.

This is a simple story told with very few words, uncluttered drawings, soft pastel colors, multiple panels, lots of white space, and many repetitions in both words and images. Nevertheless, its themes of wonder, surprise, and acceptance will resonate with young audiences, and its ending invites inference and predictions. This is a good addition for any library serving preschoolers or wanting to expand their Henkes collection.
