Dealing with Dragons by Patricia Wrede - ADVISABLE

Wrede, Patricia C. Dealing with Dragons (Enchanted Forest Chronicles #1), 224 pages.  Houghton Mifflin, 2015, 1990.  $8.

Princess Cimorene may wear a dress and a crown, but there is nothing proper about her.  In order to get away from the pesky princes around the palace, she takes off for the Enchanted Forest and finds a dragon to protect her – not eat her!

Its been 25 years since Dealing with Dragons was first published and the story and its sequels have not lost their magic and appeal.  Houghton has repacked them with covers for a younger audience.  For my middle school students I still prefer the 2003 covers from Magic Carpet.  I hope these covers will catch the eye of upper elementary students and help them stretch their fantasy reading beyond Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or retold fairy tales.

EL – ADVISABLE.

Have to say that I prefer the original Trina Schart Hyman covers. Since I have 2 copies that still circulate well, I'll stick with those for now, but if I need new copies, it's good to know they are still in print. Now, if I could just find new hardcovers of Pierce's Alanna!

I purchased the entire new set of these for my library as I have despaired at getting students to check them out with the old covers. I love that the princess is so take charge of her life and destiny and not going to be caught up in any preconceived notions.
