Glass, Andrew Flying Cars: The True Story, NON FICTION 118 pgs. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2015. $17.99. Content: G.
Since the beginning of flight, men have tried to make a plane that is as comfortable driving down the road, as it is soaring through this air. This well documented, photographically complete history of the flying car race starts with early 20th century rivals to the Wright Brothers, through WWII and the Cold War and even looks into future prototypes and kits you can buy today to update your car and make it fly. It’s amazing that none of these actually caught on! The author tells the story of experimental flight as well as the engineering feats of the inventors.
Glass has really done his research, and even ties in some “characters” from one aircar to another. This is sure to catch the eye of middle school airplane lovers; complete with glossary, source notes, bibliography and an index, the pictures are the best part.
