Princess Penelope’s Parrot by Helen Lester - ADVISABLE

Lester, Helen Princess Penelope’s Parrot, illustrated by Lynn Munsinger.  PICTURE BOOK.  Houghton Mifflin, 2013.  $9.  Content: G.

Princess Penelope is greedy and rude.  When she receives a beautiful parrot for her birthday, she tries to use force and angry words to get it to say what she wants.  When Prince Percival stops by, the parrot lets loose with all of the unkind words he learned from Penelope, driving the prince away.

While the set up is really good, this one lets things down right at the end.  While Penelope’s comeuppance is well detailed, whether she actually changes her ways or not is really not covered.
