While his best friend Rat is visiting his grandparent’s farm, a stuttering 11 year old boy takes over the paper route for a month. Delivering papers introduces him to a lot of new people, especially when he has to talk to collect the weekly payments. He’s made a new friend (Mr. Spiro), disobeyed Mam (because of Ara T) and wants to help Mrs. Worthington. But for a boy who can barely talk, the summer of 1959 in Memphis becomes a dangerous adventure.
This debut novel won a Newbery Honor. It caught me on the first page and really delivered. Mild swearing; this book is essential for both the middle school and elementary library.

I felt like there was too much sexual innuendo for elementary. I would not add this to my school library collection.
