Obi is a gerbil
that belongs to a student named Rachel. Rachel has other pets besides Obi and
when she is assigned to write a paper about which one she likes best, Obi is
determined to find out if she is chosen. In her effort to read the homework,
Obi gets brought along to school by accident, and has an overnight adventure.
I am a big fan
of Humphrey, and was excited to find a similar series. I was disappointed and
felt that Obi doesn’t have quite as much personality. The story felt long and
drawn out. Obi’s obsession with being the best pet was sort of sad, though I
think the lesson was learned at the end. Most of the time I just didn’t feel
like I was in the mindset of the gerbil. (Who doesn’t understand what a school
bus is but understands quite a few other concepts that don’t mesh well with a
gerbil point of view). I think students will find this book to be a bit on the
boring side, with some odd vocabulary choices making things more challenging.
