One Came Home by Amy Timberlake - - ESSENTIAL

Timberlake, Amy One Came Home 272 pgs. Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2013. $11.55.  Content: Language: G (0 swears);  Mature Content: G ;  Violence: PG13.

In 1871 Wisconsin 13-year-old Georgie goes on a quest to find out what really happened to her beloved sister Agatha.  Despite being accompanied by cowboy Billy McCabe, (against her wishes) and riding a mule (when she wanted a horse), Georgie bravely confronts her fears of her sister’s demise.

I really enjoyed spending time with Georgie, she is brave, talented and smart.  I loved the feel of this old fashioned western - -part mystery, part love story, part coming of age novel; this has bad guys, good guys, shoot outs, even a cougar.  I’m not surprised to see it was selected a Newbery Honor. Boys will like this book, girls will love it.  EL, MS -ESSENTIAL  Lisa Librarian

I didn't like it nearly as much, see my review. I can't believe it won an award!
