McGowan, Jennifer Maid of Secrets, 406 p. Simon &
Schuster, 2013. Violence: PG-13 (water
torture); Mature Content: PG (innuendo of mature intrigues); Language: G.
One day Meg Fellowes was a valuable actress
and a skilled pickpocket. Now, she had
better become a spy of Queen Victoria, or not her life, but the livings of her
former troupe will also be in danger.
The are other spy maids, with their own special talents, but none of
them like Meg. Too bad. Not only is there murder afoot, but someone
wants to take down Victoria herself by making her look unfit to rule the
kingdom. The handsome hanger-on in the
Spanish ambassador’s train is not a distraction that Meg needs, but he may be
the key to this mystery after all.
If you have girls who like historical mysteries, this is a
definite addition for you. Thankfully it
is not as racy as is typical for this genre, but I still wouldn’t recommend it
below 8th grade.
