Lizzy, or Li-Zhen (both are used in story), is a young girl whose life has been marked by tragedy, as her mother, father, and grandmother died battling a monstrous leviathan that has cursed the landscape. Despite this start, Lizzy has a good life. She helps her grandfather, raises goats, and flirts with the woman who rows the ferry. One day, Lizzy steals (or "borrows" as she would like to say) a couple of coins from the local sacred well. Doing so brings another curse upon her unless she can make the wishes she's stolen come true.

This is a great fantasy action-adventure with lots of Asian references. The plot almost matches the Hero's Journey pattern to a T. I thought quite a few parts of the story were almost poetic. It was so fun to see Lizzy’s character growth, even though the story itself was short and sweet. This would be a great addition to any graphic novel collection and a quick, exciting story for secondary readers.
