Nana tells the truth even though those around her don’t believe her outrageous stories.  Nana’s parents decide to send her to stay with family in Ghana after her last story gets her in trouble at school.  Nana isn’t thrilled about spending a summer in a country where she can barely speak the language. Life gets even more difficult for Nana when she actually meets Ananse, the trickster spider of legend and discovers that magic is being drained from the neighboring forest.

The story weaves between real world issues and those of magic and legend.  It’s interesting to explore life in Ghana through Nana.  The ending wraps up a bit too predictably, but it’s a nice cultural read.
