Deka is back in this thrilling sequel to The Gilded Ones. And this time, she is ready to fully embrace who she is and what her powers bring. This newfound courage and confidence can also be found within her group of warriors, born with the same powers and sworn to protect the kingdom. In order to protect those whom she loves, Deka must fight monsters and something or someone that the monsters call to as a master. As we tag along with Deka and the warriors we catch a glimpse of what life as an outcast protector really is like.
The Merciless Ones is a nice addition to the Gilded Ones series, and I do appreciate the strong character development of Deka, once shy and timid is now a strong and independent. The world is beautiful and complex, but the plot often seemed forced and not as well executed. I do love the set of pace in fantasy Forna created with African based mythology.
Deka and everyone in the novels have dark brown skin.
