A big white dog wanders into the yard while Kix and Emilia are playing.  Although they discover that the dog belongs to their neighbors, it keeps coming back to their house.  Kix’s family feeds and plays with the dog and names him Sam.  From his scrawniness and cautious personality they conclude that he’s had a rough life.  They also learn that Sam makes a great watchdog and loves having his fur brushed.  All is well until their neighbor’s son returns and wants his dog.

Translated from Dutch, this book is based on true events.  It consists of short chapters with simple illustrations.  It is a heartwarming story that will appeal to any animal lover.
