Ruurs, Margriet Birthdays Around the World PICTURE BOOK. Kids Can Press, 2017. $19
This
book features birthday celebrations from a wide variety of countries such as Vietnam,
Ghana, Cambodia, and many more. It features similarities (such as celebratory
food), but many differences as well, which students will find interesting. Each
countries celebration is told in first person format, so the reader will feel
like they are part of the celebrations and family.
I
loved this book and think it’s a valuable addition to a holiday collection. I
really like the books that feature cultures from the around the world without
being stereotypical, and this one fits the bill. Younger grade teachers will
enjoy reading this book to their classes and it would even make a fun project for 2nd
or 3rd graders to take a country from this book and do a bit more research
(such as what are the food mentioned are made of, what does the celebration look
like, and what does that city look like, etc.).
