Phi, Bao A Different Pond.
PICTURE BOOK. Illustrated by Thi
Bui. Capstone, 2017. $16.
A boy’s father wakes him up hours before the sun rises so
that they can go down to the pond to fish – not because it’s fun, but because
they need the fish to eat. Recent
refugees to America, the fish helps supplement what they can afford.
It s a good thing Bao Phi’s writing is so elegant, to make
up for my poor summary. Both author and
illustrator are from Vietnamese refugee families and together they craft a
tender look at a life most Americans won’t recognize. Art and words work together to create an
excellent starter for a writing prompt, a reading about immigration, or a look
at all the different kinds of families that make up America.
