Vernick, Audrey. Edgar’s
Second Word, PICTURE BOOK. Clarion Books, 2014. $16.99. Content: G. Hazel
is so very excited to meet her baby brother. She imagines all the things they
will get to do together. Especially… reading! When Edgar finally arrives, he’s
just as uninterested in Hazel’s reading as her stuffed animals. Eventually,
Edgar begins to talk and Hazel is thrilled. Unfortunately, Edgar’s language
skills are on the negative side. Eventually Hazel’s patience pays off and Edgar
seems to really enjoy being read to. Talk about sweet! This book is a great example of younger
children using their patience and loving a new sibling because it eventually
pays off. The illustrations combine with the text to make a fantastic book as a
whole. K-3 ADVISABLE. Reviewed by: Shay, School Librarian
