Auggie Jones likes going to the
junkyard with her grandpa. She can see the beauty in the stuff her grandpa
picks to make new again. When her old elementary is torn down, Auggie finds
herself starting at a school in a wealthier neighborhood. The new change
promises to be exciting, but her grandpa’s hobby soon alienates her. A wealthy
classmate’s father starts a House Beautification and claims her grandpa’s hobby
is in violation of the committee’s code. Her classmates, including her best
friend, all take his side. Can Auggie make her courage shine and show that what
her family does is beautiful?
Although some of the secondary
characters are under developed, the main character is likable, realistic, and
inspirational. The plot slows down in places, but is well-done. A great read
aloud or read alone for upper elementary students. Recommended for most library
collections. EL. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI
Public Library.
