slavery, Lizzie’s parents decide it is time for her and her brother to go to
school. The bit she learned there, however, made her thirsty for more. It
wasn’t easy to get there, though. Angry white folks, bad weather, and extreme
temperatures made the long trek seem longer. Will the schoolhouse withstand the
challenges the students and teacher face?
The story is touching and teaches
readers and children about the importance of bravery. The illustrations are
detailed, look realistic, and complement the well-written text. Readers and
young children who like true stories will enjoy reading this book or having it
