We Shall
Overcome: A Song That Changed the World is a wonderful non-fiction account of
how a popular historical song became an anthem for the civil rights movement.
It recounts the ways the song was used to inspire members of the community to
band together and stand up for civil rights. Singing was also used as a means
of calming angry and unruly mobs. It was
used as a peaceful way to protest when sung at rallies and gatherings. The song
became an anthem not just in the United States, but all over the world. It was
sung in South Africa in protest of the Apartheid and in India during the
Bangladesh War of Independence. Many famous singers including Bob Dylan and
Joan Baez sang “We Shall Overcome” at rallies and concerts to show their
support for the civil rights movement.
This is a wonderful book for young people
that teaches about the power of music and how standing up for what is right and
what you believe in can make a huge difference in the world. MS, HS - ADVISABLE. Reviewer: JL,
