Vanessa Brantley-Newton, We Shall
Overcome. pgs. 32. Disney Hyperion, 2013. $16.99. INFORMATION
Back when African Americans were slaves, they used song for
various reasons. To soothe the hurt of slavery, to fight the cruelty, to send
messages, and to lift their spirits. After the Civil War had ended slavery,
song was used to create believers in the cause for Civil Rights. In fact as
many protested the injustice, a song called “We Shall Overcome” was commonly
sung. It inspired Martin Luther King, Jr. to try and change the world and gain
freedom for African Americans. It took many years, many protests, and many
imprisonments, but they succeeded. This is their story.
As far as Civil Rights Movement books, this book is decently
written and the addition of the song interspersed makes it catchy. The
illustrations are detailed and eye-catching. The timeline in the back is
helpful and aligns with Common Core goals. Young readers who are interested in
the Civil Rights Movement or who need to read a non-fiction will enjoy reading
this book. EL (K-3). OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian WHI
Public Library.
