Giraud, Robert The Snow Girl, illustrated by Helene Muller.
PICTURE BOOK. FlorisBooks, 2014 (2000). $18.
On a
cold winter day, a childless couple makes a girl from snow. When
she comes to life, they enjoy their beautiful girl. When spring and then
summer arrive, however, their girl becomes sad and wistful, until the day she
goes to play in the woods with the other village girls.
Some versions of
this Russian folktale have happy endings - this one does not. Instead it
is melancholoy, with a tiny bit of hope. THe illustrations evoke the
rustic feeling of the “olden” times. It is a sweet story that you should
collect if you don’t already have it among your fairytales.
