Wake Up, Rupert! by Mike Twohy-ESSENTIAL

Twohy, Mike, Wake up, Rupert! Pgs. 28. Simon and Schuster, 2014. $16.99. PICTURE BOOK.

Rupert is a rooster who doesn’t like to get up early enough to wake up the farm. He has to set 6 alarm clocks in high to reach places just to be awake enough in the morning to get everyone else up. When his friend, Sherman the sheep offers to do his job for him, Rupert jumps at the chance. After all, why does he have to be the one to always do it. Will Rupert get his wish or will things be more disastrous than he thought?

A funny, cute farm story for fans of Doreen Cronin. The pictures are colorful and entertaining. The text is unique and engaging with a lot of chances for readers to play with intonations if they wish. Not only does the text teach in a simple way the importance of hard work, but the text and pictures work well together and masterfully bring to life the world of Rupert. A great read aloud for parents, teachers, and librarians to read with other children or for a little older child to read to themselves.

PreK, EL (K-3). ESSENTIAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian WHI Public Library.
