Shurtleff, Liesl Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstilskin, 264 p. Knopf, 2013. $16.99. Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG
In the magical kingdom where Rump was born only humans have names. When Rump was born his mother died after whispering his name to him. Unfortunately, his grandmother could only hear the first part of his name, Rump. As Rump grows up he is small and constantly bullied by children and adults, especially the mean spirited miller. His luck seems to change when he finds an old spinning wheel hidden in the woodpile. He discovers he can spin straw into gold. His grandmother and his friend, Red, both warn him of using magic. He does indeed get in a lot of trouble and has a heap of adventures. He sets out on a quest to unravel the magic and discover his real name. On his quest he encounters not only the evil miller, but also a queen, pesky pixies, trolls, poison apples, witches and many great adventures.
This is cute story and if you like fairy tales and folk tales, you will surely love the story of Rumpelstilskin. I recommend this book for any and every age reader.
